MOOCketing

I've been watching EdStartup gear up, and was mildly interested in how it would play out, so when I saw some comments from Stepehn Downes I gave them a read.

Stephen remarked upon the fact that a site called Edsurge was identified as "required reading" - I had never heard anything about Edsurge.

From a quick visit to their site it felt as much like an advertising portal as an informational resource. Admittedly, I didn't spend much time there, but I didn't see much in the way that would compel a longer visit either - but that could be a design issue, and I digress.

And as I watch this course unfold, I wonder how far away we are from the day when MOOCs evolve into a blend of informal learning and PR/Marketing outreach? With the caveat that all start-ups require heavy doses of marketing, it'll be curious to see how EdStartUp balances actual learning with the drive to self-promote.
